Yeah, the cheapest route is to replace the thermostat and go from there. Make sure you get the 2 stage thermostat so you don't end up with "temperature guage overshoot"

Well, I actually thought it was the correct route (apart from it being the cheapest too). Many a time have I read threads on this topic.

it doesnt make sense that thermostat is stuck open when i have lots of heat and engine actually feels hotter than it should be, it gets so hot sometimes like today that it will cough/totally skip or miss every once in a while when sitting idling in gear, have to shut heater off it will cook you out of the cab,

and when its sitting and idling out of gear it will sound like popcorn in exhaust kinda but irregular

but it has good power and cruises and such all fine,

if therm was stuck open then symptoms would be long time to warm up, and/or would always be cold

but it heats up quick, sometimes too much, on some warm days

the guage is garbage i guess
just like the fuel sender, and and and...

thanks

The factory Toyota gauge in the dash is an "idiot gauge" . I looks like a gauge but can act like an idiot light. How so? Toyota's temp gauges seems "weighted" to allow a range of temps to appear like a rock solid reading in the middle of the gauge.

After my dash gauge went dead, I installed a Sunpro electric temp gauge with the sensor in the factory location (in the top front of the intake manifold). This temp gauge has a needle that actually MOVES according to engine loads.

I actually like mechanical temp gauges better (wider gauge sweep, less electricals, reads even when the ingition is OFF), but the larger "bulb" sender bottoms out on the interior casting of the block...and is on the radiator side (cooler side) of the block. This area is also a low point in the block, as that is where the block drain is...and sediment can collect over the bulb.

You're confusing me. Your first post mentioned the gauge didn't go above 1/8 of the temp gauge. Now you say it's hot.

But the temp gauge measures the COOLANT TEMPERATURE. Meaning, it's not circulating properly when it's stuck at 1/8 mark and you KNOW the engine is hot. So it does not absorb engine HEAT and it remains COOL.

By the way, it's easier to change the thermostat then the temp gauge...

i said the engine gets hot

not the guage

the thermostat is fine, everything gets real hot, radiator, hoses, engine, heater, all that stuff, its all normal,

just the guage never gets off 1/8 way past C mark

thanks

Well, it's your car/truck. If you think the thermostat is fine, I have nothing else to say. Goodluck finding your problem.

I have a 94 4x4 that I bought new and the temp guage never has gone past 1/4. Noticed that it hardly moves now. Was ready to by a new sensor but will try the thermostat first. Thanks all for the advice.

more than likely it's your coolant temp. sending unit. if your hearing gurling noises from engine cooling system u might want to make sure all the air has been evacuated from the system.
