Been driving my 85 pickup (SR5, long box, 2WD) for about 8 years now, and have a combined (not all done by me) 350,000 KM's on the engine. Love the look of the truck and don't want to get rid of it, so I've been thinking about doing an engine swap. I've heard some folks putting an older supra engine in, or I've been looking at rebuilt 22-re's. Just wondering if many people out there in the TN world have done many swaps and with what, and how successuflly.
Thanks for the feedback.
Make sure you install a METAL head gasket in your 7MGTE! Those engines are known for the crappy head gaskets. I had to replace mine 2 times before changed over to metal.
got it comming from japan ... except its comming on the slow boat ... I have ordered one with the 5 speed ( most are autos) .. its taking a little while longer . you need one ? mines a 7mgte , with tranny , dilivered to my shop for ~ 1G . I might be able to add another .
I would go with a reman'd 22R or 22R-E.
Myself, Id go with a 22R because its a very simple engine and there isnt a thing on it that you couldnt repair yourself should you ever need to. The only downside to the 22R is the fact that its not a very powerfull engine. Stock they were only about 90 hp.
The 22R-E was another great engine. Its got the superior running quality of EFI along with more power (118 hp).
Another good engine would be a 22R-TE (22-RE with a turbo). Those were pretty impressive in terms of power (150 hp).

I just thought I'd mention .... I would think you would know .... but the 7MGTE engine is NOT a direct bolt in ... There is lots of "fab" work that i'm going to have to do , but I can do it .
I'm just in the midst of getting the cab off , and going to get to work on the frame , fab stuff i'm looking at so far is mounting engine and tranny , most likely a new tranny tunel , and possably firewall work ... hood clearance for intercooler , my glass hood should take care of it , but not yet sure . Thats where i'm starting .
I would also say get a 22RE and turbo the sucker.....
PERSONALY however i would put a S/C 3.4L 5VZ into one of those...ill be doing one for a customer probably this winter...going to be fun fun...the 2k5 Tacoma 6spd Transmission aparently bolts up to this engine as well...so thats exciting.

Reason: Whoops
yeah, I am personally leaning towards a rebuilt 22-re, since that is what i have now. Anyone know any decent master rebuilt kits for these engines?
I have also thought about going fairly radical and transplanting basically an entire supra MKIII (complete drivetrain and suspension transplant). but this is only if I get a super paying job that gives me lots of time off (yeah right...)
Jasper engines might offer something in the way of a rebuild kit. In fact, you might just be able to buy a entire reman'd engine from them that you could merely replace your old engine with.
You could probably have the old engine out and the new one in and running in less than 8 hours. We did a 302 replacement on my brother's '91 F-150 a few years back and it took about 6 hours. I would think a 22R-E would take a little bit less time because it has about 1/2 of the electrical BS that a 302 has (and a whole lot more room under the hood to work in).
