Definatly opt for the 89-94 (6th generation) 2wd pick-up. Toyota dealership techs refer to these as "The last of the good years." The tacomas went to a rack and pinion setup which is crap. Ask the owners who have had to replace the tie rods, racks and deal with assosiated leaks at less 80,00 miles. CV joint problems are included. The tacos also have a thinner, flimsy frames with certian models that only came with C frames unlike the sturdy boxed in ones that all of the previous models included. Tacomas suffer from frame flexing which is so severe that one owner noted that his bed dug into the cab during very moderate 4 wheeling

He said he'd give anythig to find a nice 85 like he use to own and is not happy with the taco purachse. He noted a long list of problems that occurred before he even reached 100,000 mi and said he babied the thing unlike his 85 that he beat the hell out of and never gave him a problem. The list of complaints go on. Toyota still stocks virtually every part (which are easily obtainable and much cheaper than other models) for the 89-94's (acutally until first half of 95) due to their 6 year production run instead of the typical 4. Do yourself a favor and buy a very nice, low milage, well taken care of, 6th generation 22re
