93 Toyota Pickup 5-spd problem

I have a 93 Toyota Pickup with 105K miles and I am having a problem with the manual transmission occasionally popping out of gear. It only happens in 1st, 3rd & 5th and never after the clutch is engaged. When I remove the shift boots, the problem gets better but does not go away completely. I was also told that a new rear mount for the transmission might help, since it might have sagged over the past 12 years, but after I replaced it, the problem seemed to get worse.

It is just not going into gear correctly in 1st, 3rd & 5th. I don't think it is internal to the transmission, because the things I have done seem to make a difference.
Anyone have any ideas on what I should try?

Thanks

There are 2 shifter bushings, one nylon and one rubber, that wear out over time. These buggers cause all kinds of problems like yours when they wear out. Here is a writeup that shows how to replace them. These problems occur in 4 and 6 cylinders as well as 2wd and 4x4's. This writeup deals with 4x4's but is said to be similar to the 2x4's.

These wore out in my 93 around 70K and when the clutch was was replaced at 119K. Cheap little piece that costs a few dollars in labor.

If you ever get your clutch done make sure you get them replace too. I got the truck back & a day later I lost first, then third, then fifth. Had to take it back. Such a pain.

wish i would have known about those cheap bushings a few years ago, had the same problem, and the shop said i needed a whole new transmission, which cost a ton, maybe i would have been able to save some cash by just changing those bushings, live n learn

That fixed it! I stopped by the Toyota dealer and picked up the bushings and replaced them today. With the info provided, it was fairly easy to switch them out. The old 'seat' was broken into a bunch of pieces. Once I put it back together with the new bushings, it shifted just like new. Thanks for your help, this really saved me.

Thanks, this solved my problem also. My rubber seat had disintegrated into hundreds of little pieces. I thought I had a synchronizer problem. Thanks again.
