truck wont take gas

ok got a problem with the 87, when you try and put gas in it it will not take it it will spit gas out on the ground and shut the pump handle off, its a major PITA

what is the problem with it, its pissing me off, i cant add any gas to the damn truck, it refuses it, the damn filler neck is huge, there is no reason for this!

thanks

Maybe your're just getting great gas mileage and the tank isn't low yet.

I'd poke a wire (coat hanger, or?) down the inlet and see if there is an obstruction. If so, the inlet is easy to remove so you can get at it.

Try a different pump or gas station would be my suggestion.

Isn't that what happens when your tank is already full?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but I didn't want to mention the obvious . Also, maybe your gas gauge isn't working properly too.

Won't take gas

Had the same problem with my 2003. There is a check valve at the bottom of the filler tube to prevent gas from leaking out incase you flip (so I was told). The dealer had to replace the gas tank to correct problem . They tried several things first.

lol

you guys are funny haha

ok i drive this truck 40 some miles a night, to work and back,

thats 7 to 800 a week altogether including in town and errands and such, it gets 20mpg at its best times,

the neck is screwy, its liek it doesnt vent right, i dont understand it, and it does this at all gas stations, it doesnt matter what one,

it pisses me off, it spits the gas out at you real hard it will soak you with the gas and shoot it all over the pavement

its not good...

it will literally not take gas!

it will take it just fine if i unclamp the metal tube from the rubber hose and put the nozzle right into the rubber filler hose, will take gas perfectly fine then,

i even punched the tube out, where the small hole and spring loaded flap is for the gas pump nozzle end to fit into,

that didnt help at all either,

i just dont know what the deal is

oh by the way the truck had no pickup bed on it, its a wooden flat bed

so its all out in the open plain view and easy access, the filler hose and tank and all..

anymore ideas anyone ?

the filler tube and hose is huge, theres no reason why it cant move air and such and allow gas to enter tank filler very easily

i am lost..

i dont understand what the big deal is with it..

thanks

how am i supposed to do that ? how can you just "check" that ?

that system is there to collect vapors is all, not for venting when filling, the vent for filling is that 3/8" or so hose in the filler neck tube down to top of tank!

what is the deal with this thing ?

i mean i CAN put gas into the tank, but have to be VERY careful and SLOW about it

its crazy!

thanks

If the hose to the tank is clear with nothing in the way and you can fill it up very slowly and carfully like you mentioned above the problem is that there is not enough room for the air in the tank to escape while filling up. I know you talked about this above but that would be the only problem. Try drilling out the hole for the air escape on the bottom of the part that the hose is held into place by. It should be just below the filler cap.
Had this problem with a 96 ranger with a utility bed.(A different bed, And you have a wooden bed)I drilled out the hole and gas can enter much faster now.

compressed air hmm not bad idea, ill have to try that in the hoses,

the filler is not blocked at all i know for fact ive had it off and all apart,

so..

and gas evaporates so fast that id hate to have an open vent, would be dangerous and wasteful of gas anyways

so hmm..

thanks

I had this problem with an old boss's Chevy truck .the filler tube was too horizontal too take the gas properly,Fast68,you said there's no bed so is the filler tube flopping down?Try to elevate the end of it more,or make sure it's not kinked and definitly not horizontal to the tank connection.
