electric fans

i have an 85 4-runner 22re. it is strictly a woods truck. i am having problems keeping it cool so i got a set of electric fans. my question is should i take off my old fan and mount them to suck air throuugh or should i run my stock fan and have the electric fans pushing air through. worried if i take them off and they go out on the trail i would be in trouble

well, you could do a push/pull set of fans. i would not use the factory clutch-driven fan just because it kind of defeats the purpose...the clutch-driven fan would have a little bit of parasitic drag. if you have problems keeping it cool, look at your water/coolant mixture and your thermostat. you may consider doing like a set of sprayers or something on your radiator. maybe it's kinda caked in mud. i use distilled water and Toyota RED coolant with RedLine Watter Wetter. works like a charm!

If your truck is overheating and everything else is ok, I would suspect the clutch is bad on your fan. The one on my '85 went out at around 50-60k. The electric option is probably a good idea. I would remove the stock fan first.

Push/Pull is not a good idea and wouldn't work unless both fans are spinning at the exact same speed. It will probably restrict air flow and would do more harm than good.

well, not to be a jerk or anything, but if he were buying fans, isn't it possible for him to buy two fans that are the same specs?

I don't see how the fans in push-pull would move any more air than a single fan would. The only benefit I see is the redundancy in case one fails. If there is room, he would get more cooling with each fan on a different area of the radiator.

the push-pull thing was facotry on one of the many Toyotas i've owned. and yeah, you would not place the fans on top of one another, one on each side.

just make sure the fans you purchased move enough air to cool it with out the clutch driven fan
Not all electric fans move enough air to do the job on their own.
i would also mount them as pullers fust to avoid a situation where you hit some deep water and the water pushes the blades into the radiator
i would hook them up on 2 seperate switches so you can run them separately incase you need to take one off and give it to someone else to get them off the trail.

if you can modify the existing shroud to help your new setup pull over the full radiator and not just in front of the fan.
