long bed/short bed interchangeability

Can you put a short bed on a long bed truck? Or vice/versa? Does the difference in length come behind the rear wheels or between the wheels and the cab? I know for sure the extra cab and regular cab beds are not interchangeable, but I don't know about regular cab to regular cab, etc.

There are only 2 beds ... short and long . The differance is center of wheel well to the front of the bed , on a long bed , it is 9" longer , as well as at the back .

They will NOT interchange .

my 87 xtra cab bed appeared to be long length, it wasnt a shorty like s-10 short bed pickup beds are.. hmm


anyone know the distance from axle to cab for a long or a short bed on these trucks?

long beds measure ~ 87" from front wall to tailgate ...

short beds measure ~ 75" "" "" ""

ALL extra cabs 4X4s /84-/88 were short beds in the North American Market ... There were some 2wd's that were converted to 4wd by some company , cant remember who ... I was actually going to do this myself , but I couldnt find a good 2wd .

I see, so the wheel base is different from long to short beds then....
