Just got a 83 4x4 with a junk motor. Crank walked almost .25 inch forward so the block is junk, but the head was just rebuilt. I would like to replace it with the same engine to save hassles with emissions and wiring. The trouble is I can’t find a 83 or 84 engine or block to use. From what I have been able to find out those are the only two years that are a direct bolt in. If this is wrong please enlighten me. Or is there another year that is close so there won’t be to many modifications. I have line on a 82 but then I can’t use the rebuilt head because of timing chain issues.
I could be wrong, but I thought they were all the same until 86 when they changed the deck height and used a different head.

Yes you are correct, they will all bolt in but the wiring and emissions don't match. I’m not much on wiring. After 82 they went from a double roller timing chain to a single roller set up. So I am assuming I can’t put a 83 head on a 82 block?I don’t know to much about Toyotas, this is my first one. But I have owned three (cough JEEPS ).
You can put any 22R block in your truck, just not a 22RE. 22R's from '81 to '84 will work, even one out of a pre-'85 non-EFI Celica, although you will have to change the oil pan and oil pick-up tube.
I know 22R's from '81 to '84 will work, but the emmissions and elec. stuff arn't the same, or is that not to much of a hassel to deal with?
I would like to use the head I have, its just been rebuilt.
Shouldn't be a hassle. Just keep the emissions and electrical stuff from your truck. Heck we just put an 86 engine into an 84. Used all the 84 intake stuff, exhaust, and electrical. Those are different engines. The 86 has the pear shaped exhaust ports and the 84 had the round ones. Different deck height, etc. Intake is the same, though. All the outside stuff bolted right up. The only problem I can imagine you having is the timing chain in the years you are mentioning. Make sure you have a new kit, and just use that. Then you have the same rows top and bottom. I don't think the distance from crank to cam changed, did it?

double chain is quite a popular swap in to these engines ... I have done it many times , and would highly recomend it . all you need is the longer oil pump drive gear to swap in to make it happen .
I have a line on a 82, but the rebuilt head I have is to an 83. So all I should have to do is get a double roller gear for the head right? Thanks Kevin

No ... you'll have to get the whole double chain set , including gears , guides , chain and tensioner ... then you'll have to get the oil pump drive gear for the double set up .
