USA Fuel Gage not working in 1999 4 Runner

My Fuel gage in my 99 4runner is acting wierd. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. It will show that its empty when its full, and full when its empty. I heard there was a problem with the fuel gages in this year model. Does anyone know anything about this? Its this a cheap fix or not.

My 1999 $runnner started having fuel gauge problems after about 3 months and I was told by the dealer that to get it fixed they had to send the dash instrument panel to Japa and the truck would be out of service for 3-6 weeks. I told them to forget it since they weren't offering a loaner. I then went overseas to Germany with the Army and while ther I got the Dealer to try to fix it after 3 attempts it would work for about 1 week to 2 months and then the same thing over again. I gave up and just use the trip odometer. Now that I am back in the States I thing I will contact Toyota and ask them again for a repair. But no it is not cheap as the original dealer said it is a problem with the computer chip in the dash with the odometer, not the main computer. Anyway there is a problem and TOYOTA knows about it so they maybe coerced to fix it free. I'm going to check on it.

USA

I am in the Army and Stationed in Germany now. I have been using the Odometer also. But as you know driving on the autobahn sucks gas quick. So I might get 300 miles out of one tank and the next tank where I drive on the autobahn for 3 hrs I run out at 240miles. Its a real pain. Toyota fixed this when I first boughted it back in 99. It worked just fine until about a year ago. Let me know if you figure anything out.

I have had this happen to my '99 4Runner twice. Both times showing full when I only had half a tank. I don't imagine that it's a cheap fix and I doubt that there will ever be a recall.
