What to look for???

I'm going to start hunting through the junk yard for a new bed for my 86 pick up.
I was thinking if I come across a good engine and trans from another truck or car I could pick it up to keep as a spare.

Also I'm a VW guy at heart and know there are a lot of interchangable parts for them.
Is it the same with the Toy's? Reason I ask is cause I have the real basic model not even a cigarette lighter. Although this is a train car it may turn out to be the new project once my project 944 gets on the road.

fellow NYer...welcome to the nation. I

not a lot of interchangable parts...I'm guessing you have a 22re engine, if so, it is immortal... can be a fun project or a money dump...choice is how far you wanna go with it

it's a 22r, carb not EFI and auto.

What about engines and tranny's? This is my first truck with a carb, can I pick up an EFI engine and just yank the intake off and put mine on? This is going to be my daily driver for a while so I don't plan on doing anything drastic yet. like I said I'm going hunting in the junk yard so if I come across a low milage engine for cheap I want to grab it just in case.

looked under the truck yesterday and noticed a lot of gunk on the back of the oil pan and tranny. It had fresh oil coating it so this week I'll be getting the pressure washer out. Then keeping an eye out for leaks.
