2.7 tacoma fuel mileage

dudes. my buddy has an 03 2wd tacoma with the 2.4 motor and does about 30 mpg. wondering how the new 2.7s do with fuel in 2wd and 4wd. they have good epa ratings but that can sometimes be deceptive and actual user data rules. if the 2.7 is thirsty for fuel i'll find a 2.4 leftover or go to the used market.

Used to have an '02 quadcab with a shell so figure in the extra weight for my mileage:

15~17 around town

19~21 on the freeway.

Also had a lo restriction muffler and a K&N FIPK setup on it. Pepped up that 4 banger pretty good but very noisy under hard acceleration and load.

The EPA fuel economy estimates are pretty much the same for the new Tacoma as they were for the old one.
The hp ratings for the current 2.7L can be decieving because its a VVT-i engine. The engine doesnt always put out 170 hp. Only once you get the engine wound up and it shifts over to the high-lift cam do you get 170 hp. Most of the time Id bet that its much lower, 140-150 hp would be my best guess.
