Thank you in advance!
The previous owner installed a lift kit and 33" tires.
Is it recommended to put 4.88 gears in front and rear to increase my top speed (now its about 50 mph)
Will changing the gears increase my milage?
The shifters seems low. It mushes the rubber boot. Will a short shifter work here to reduce the throw of the shifter? (both tranny and diff) or are there extenders available?
I love this little truck and with the price of gas lately, I like it even more! We also have a 95 4- runner.
Thanks and I can't wait to fix these little problems.
yeah the 4.88's will get you back on track. It wont be as good as stock due to increased tite weight and wind drag. When I had my 3" bodylift and 33's put on my truck I gopulnd get passed 60 and thats with the gas floored, the 4.88' did the trick. I have a 94 with the 4cly do you have the 4 banger?
One thing to remember with 33" tires is that yur speedo and odometer are off by about 15%. That is what mine is. I can do 65mph with my 4cyl but that is actually about 75mph. Clock your odometer on the highway using mile markers. Going 10 miles on markers, my odometer goes 8.5 miles.
If you can only do 50mph, you have other problems that regearing will not fix.

I went out and did a serious test run. My truck pinched loaves, but I managed 62 mph. So hopefully 4.88 gears with my 33" tires will improve this.
suspension lift....good, body lift.....bad. my guess is a suspension lift is more expensive.
One of the posts I read said (re. installing gears) " the tolerances are within a few 1000ths." I figured it would be just opening the diffs. and replacing the gears? Is this correct or is there going to be machining involved here?
It kills me to pay for an install, if it something I can do. Do I dare try it?
Is there anything else I should do while I'm in there doing the gears? Ya' know like doing your clutch when the tranny is out...
It would be wiser to remove the 3rd member and take it to a shop that does differentials. The CD (checking distance) is set to .002" and the backlash is set to .005 - .007 with run-out not deviating more than .002. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/gear_setup/
Check out this site for a full procedure.
I still think you may be under powered due to other problems. Mine is an everyday driver doing doing 65mph. If I push her, I have done about 80 which translates to about 92mph actual.

dude bodylift does not equal bad! cutting corners and being cheap is bad! the previous owner who put the bodylift on was either lit-up or just didnt have the experience to do it right! or the kit didnt have all the necessary extensions or all of the above! I knew when I got my 3" bodylift that I didnt have the tools or the skill to put it on so I let some really good friends that worked at Discount Tire who put lifts on every type of 4x4 out there do it. And let me tell you those guys did a hell of a job! Not only that I got a great deal on my 33's as well. It looks great, functions perfect, they did extend both shifters. When I drove it home all was good until I got on the hiway and my wife called me on my cell asking me where I was! Well I was about 15 miles behind her because my truck wouldnt go passed 60mph. I was pissed so I called every toyota offroad place and they all said RE GEAR TO 4.88!! I DID and never looked back. it did the trick. I can hit 100mph no problem. DUDE TRUST ME RE_GEAR!! Hey if your worried about messing up get a pro to do it or at least show you how. REMEMBER: THE BITTERNESS OF POOR QUALITY REMAINS LONG AFTER THE SWEETNESS OF LOW PRICE IS FORGOTTEN! sorry such a long post but if you love your TOY like I love mine every bit of info counts! later
