brake trouble

i just picked up a 1980 toyota pickup.. when i press the brake i have to push it all the way to the floor before it grabs.. and i went to pull the caliper and undid the wrong bolt and some fluid dripped out so i think i need to do a brake bleed.. but the pads on the front are in good shape just old.. the MC kinda looks like it is leaking.. is there another type of master cylinder i can put in there besides another 1980s truck one.. i kno a lot about jeeps is it possible i could get one of those to fit.. ?

i think the reason you have to push so hard on the brake pedal is because there is some air in your brake lines. Try bleeding them out some more. Just a guess. Good Luck

I saw your other post and well here is my opinion. Look at the rear wheels and start from there. You will want to check every inch of your'e break system (rusty lines, seepage from fittings) also wet spots in the drum are bad! You might as well start with the wheel cylinder and work your way to the master cylinder. The parts are cheap to replace, don't skimp and try rebuilding stuff like the wheel cylinders and master cylinder. The fluid in the system is most likely crap so you might want to flush that out. Brake fluid is cheep.

BTW how is the frame on that beast? How much rot is on the cab?

I would love for someone to 'give' me an old 'yota because I need a low to the ground parts runner.

if you check your brake system, flush it and replace the fluid, MC and check it again you should be fine. cheap parts like autozone or the junkyard. for a MC the junkyard might have some good stuff.

it could also mean that you need a new slave cylinder. I just ordered a pair for my 96 runner. I had the same problem, the brake pedal would go all the way down
