1983 P/u Transmission

i am currently replacing my transmission on my 1983 p/u i got the new transmission up into place and the splines are lining up because when i spin the crank with a socket the whole transmission turns.... the problem i am having is the last 3/4 of an inch i cant get it to slide in i have tried with numerous friends to get it in.... does anyone have any tricks or suggestions????

use guide studs...the input shaft is hangin up on the pilot bearing...do you use a line up tool?...use guide studs...draw them up with a little preload and have someone push the clutch pedal down..it should slide in then
