USA '85 P.U. running rich

hey, I have a ?
Got a '85 toyota pickup. 2WD, 4 speed, 22r engine. having problems with the carb. running VERY rich. very high idle. Sometimes i can get it to kick down to what seams to be a normal idle then it will want to die on me. It's one extreme to the other. I bought a repair manual and it states something about a "degree gauge" being needed to adjust the carb. I'm just a back yard wrencher. Could a senser be out or do I need to take it to a repair shop and have it fixed?
thanks DCON

One possibility is that the float needs replacing. You can check the float level by looking at the sight glass on the side of the float bowl. You can adjust it with the screw and lock nut on the top of the bowl. If the adjustment does not work, the float is probably bad. There are some other possibilities, but overhauling the carb is not extremely difficult. I don't remember the need for a "degree gauge" when I did mine several years ago.

Thanks reb!! I will try it this weekend. I figured out that I am getting 17 mpg. I think this is low for this truck. Is it? I guess I really don't know what the mpg should be. Thanks again for the reply!
