USA help with trailer wiring Tacoma 02'....

Please help!
I went to a professional trailer distributor, he installed a hitch and tried to wire my Tacoma PreRunner for a trailer. Their wiring harness (T-1) didn't work......when the brake is depressed the left turn signal won't work right....and other bugs. They suggested I call my Toyota dealer, which I did. THey said I need a converter ($160) plus the wiring harness ($80). I can't believe I have to spend this much money. I called my local auto parts distributor, they claim they have everything I need for only $40 but I've got to pay for it up front......which means if it doesn't work I won't get my money back. Somebody please tell me what will work.

That $40 should buy what you need. For most vehicles, all you need is an assembly that plugs into the wiring harness, using existing connectors. That assembly usually includes the converter that allows you to operate standard trailer lights (stop and turn signals on the same bulb) with the import standard, which uses separate bulbs. The thing to look out for is what did the trailer distributor do to your wiring? BTW, you can beat that $40 price by a few $ on the web, but shipping will eat up most of the difference. I installed one on my wife's truck a couple of months ago. Simple task.

Yep, sounds like they have your harness wired up wrong. They should have to correct it, I would think. If not, I would definitely remove their hookups and make sure you seal any wires that they have tapped into to prevent corrosion. The auto parts stores do have the vehicle specific plugs and it is an easy install.
