22RE Bearing Problem

Hi People,

I have a 91 Toyota pickup with a 22RE. The engine was rebuilt recently (<3000 miles). The crank is .25 main and rod. The problem began with a slight chirping at low throttle settings. I have found the culprit, but not the real problem. The #4 rod bearing and #5 main bearings are galded. No sign of heat (no discoloration), just rough surface with scarring. I suspect that they were starved for oil, but cannot determine how to correct the problem. The journals on the crank are in great shape. No damage at all to them. No oil light on. Engine was not overheated.

The plug is in the crank on #4 rod counterbalance. I inspected the #3 rod and #4 main and they look great.

I am looking for the true cause of this or a method of determining it as I want to repair it right the first time.

Thank-you in advance!

Was the clearances checked on each bearing with plastigauge? A lot of people that do it their self order bottom end kits and just install them. Was the engine broken in properly? Was there contaiments in the oil? There is many factors in this case.

Oh yeah check to see if the crank is bent or the main journals out of line.

I just had a quick question about this. I am getting a chirping sound at certain throttle settings, only when the engine is cold....as soon as the engine gets to operating temp, the slight chirp is gone. When you were having your 'chirp'....did it happen all the time, or did it go away as the engine warmed up?

Sorry I am not helping with your problem, but this is making me worried to read what you described

I recently did my timing chain (and before, the chirp wasn't there). I changed my water pump, so I thought it may be the problem...but I haven't investigated it. It doesn't sound like a belt, and I don't think it would be the chain because it is only a certain point in the throttle (like if I hold it at a certain RPM while I am parked)

Just a little input on your 'chirp' would be great. If I have to I will start another thread with my own problem...

Thanks

The problem was a damaged #4 rod and #5 Main bearing. I had an old mechanic look at the bearings and he told me that there must have been some shavings etc in the main journal oil galley and it was pushed into the bearing surface. I inspected all the other bearings and they are fine. I also opened up the oil filter and "it did a fine job!"

I cleaned, guaged and reassembled it and the chirp was gone. It runs strong and quiet.
