Question Lug bolts ?

So, i had a mishap on the freeway , i was doing 80mph when my front right tire/wheel flew right off.. ill spare you the details, but ill show you a pic

anywho, the shop that took it in, said with running 33inch tires i should consider getting longer lug bolts?

ive heard that if you dont tighten them down occasionally they can loosen up, its just hear say though

should i be okay running the stock lug bolts with the new tires and wheels .. they are bfg muds 33x12.50s on 16x8 rims .. im pretty sure theyre eights. ? i dont want this same thing happening ..

i did a google search and couldnt find anything on extenders or what not... any solutions would help

If your lugs are torqued properly, you shouldn't have a problem.Someone posted about the same prob last week.Did you have any work done lately or any enemies?maybe you just got pranked. It must have started feeling pretty strange before it fell off-it takes awhile for six lugs to completely unthread...

honestly, it didnt feel weird, but i didnt hear things - almost as if something was flying off (imagine that) ... then i witnessed my last lug fly and bam, there i drop a good 20 inches at 80mph .. it was a rush, but luckily nothing too serious happened

i tq them with a spanner wrench as hard as i can ... i dont know any certain spec on them, but if you have any idea, let me know.. and i can check, ive just never really tightened lugs on anything more than my arms can go (ie. breaker bar)

as far as enemies, who knows.. its always a possibility.

so if they are tq'd on there correctly, i shouldnt have any issues?

are your rims aluminum?if so torque 120lbs-you really need to have them torqued evenly so use a torque wrench or a torque stik if using air tools.aluminum especially!! I lost a wheel on a car I was towing thru Arizona,it was night and the sparks flew!i found the wheel in the median with the lugs still in the hubcap.lol.

I have run bigger tires and rims for the last 20 years and have never had a problem with the stock lugs. Only thing I do is check the lugs every time I wash my truck to make sure they are tight-only takes a few minutes.

I know people that have ran 44x19.5r15 with stock lugs with no problems. I have seen some rims with thicker flanges though. If there isn't much thread sticking out for the lug nut to grab I could see a problem then.

I just got my '96 rav4 with stock 16 steel rims. Owner's manual is on it's way. Can anyone give me the torque specs? Also, the size of the lug? I know it's larger than my 19mm socket, but not sure if it's quite 21mm?

Thanks!

Well, for a Tacoma the torque should be 85 ft/lbs using a 21mm socket. That's if you have the factory aluminum star pattern wheels on '01-'04s. 120# is way too much IMHO. You might warp your rotors having them torqued too tight.
