Fuel pressure problem

I just recently bought an 85 22re 4wd and noticed that it had a pair of vice grips on the fuel return line, being curious i took them off the line and the motor came to a sputtering halt. From that moment on I have been trying everything I can do to make the truck run without the vice grips.I have replaced the fuel pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap and rotor, air filter, and the fuel pressure regulator. It's running better now, but I still need to keep the vice grips on for it to work somewhat normal. The only thing that I can think of now is to replace my injectors. Any help would be appreciated.

After thinking loooooong and hard about this one, I think I may have found your problem. Fuel damper. Yep, that diaphragm looking thing on the fuel rail. I even found some info on the net about it.

Hold on, scrath the part I said about the diaphram on the fuel rail, that's the fuel pressure regulator. You already replaced that. I still think it's the pulsation damper, but I can't find the exact location in person. However, according to my factory service manual, it is after the fuel filter, but before the fuel pressure regulator. According to the picture of the FSM, it looks like a diaphragm of some sort.

Ok, I finally pulled my head out of my ass and whipped out the factory microfiche slides....I keep forgeting that I have them The pulsation damper is at the opposite end of the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. If the motor that you have is original with the truck, you are looking at part# 23270-35010. It will cost you $44.97 from 1sttoyotaparts.com. Plan on paying at least 62.46 from the local dealer, if not more.

Alright, I finally got the new fuel damper and replaced the old one. The truck runs a bit smoother now but it still needs a little pressure from the vice grips on the fuel return line to run.

did you ever solve this problem?

I have a similar problem with my 85 celica 22re not including the vice grips.

And did you determine if there was vacume at the fuel pressure regulator?

it would seem that you have to block the return to make more pressior in the fuel rail . could pull the injectors and have them tested to make sure they are working right . what ever you do don`t use after market injecters go to jusk yard and pull toy injecters befor doing this . if this is a no go sure i have a set in the shop from a 86 that should be the same hookup as the 85 know the 88 hook is different but easy fix with wire change out

reason for not using after market injecters is they will work but nippel is a little shorter then stock injecter and this will stop the injecter from spraying mist into motor as it should I have had to replace more the one after market injecter for this every reason . you would be looking at around 400 for new is why i was saying to look at getting them from junk yard.

if you can not find them drop me a line at Marty_redman2001@yahoo.com under injecters need and we will see what we can do .
