burning coolant 22re

Just changed my head gasket and the exhaust smoke smells sweet and is white and is excessive. I had the re-surfaced and it checked out. Could I have a coolant leak in the intake manifold?

The reason I changed the head gasket in the first place was I could tell from the oil something was up. I was right, the gasket had blown and I ended up needing to get a small amount of welding done. So I know the head is good, I cleaned the block surface, new gasket...... Every thing went great on re-assembly, the intake manifold side was more difficult but nothing too strange. This is why I wonder if I could be getting coolant from the intake side.

Lots of sweet white smoke.

I just changed my head gasket this week also. I blew the U-shaped water line under the intake manifold while on highway and it blew the head gasket also. Happened Tuesday night, worked on it every night after working 7:30-4:30, and finished Saturday before noon. It is back on the road.
What problems did you have on the intake side? When you say burning coolant, do you mean losing coolant and suspect it is leaking internal? What needed the welding? The head?

I just took off the intake manifold and think I found the problem. The gasket has definite signs of coolant leaking into one of the ports. I am guessing the gasket moved a little on me when I was messing around with tube that attaches to the bottom of the intake manifold under the coolant temp sensor. Also, I think I might have missed running the bolt threads through a die as well which maybe screwed up my torque values. I cleaned so many bolts but may have missed the bag I labeled "intake".

There was no external leaking of coolant, just lots of sweet smelling white smoke. I am going to get a new intake gasket and slap it back together.

I am pretty confident my problem will be over.

previously....
The welding was between a cylinder sealing surface and a coolant port. It looked like the gasket blew and then the gases just ate away a little of the metal. The shop did a great job repairing it and pressure check was good.

Anyway, glad to hear you're up and running, if this attempt doesn't work out I will post another message with explanation.
