Bucking, Rough Running Truck
While driving to work this morning, my 90 pickup (22R) with just a little over 100K miles started bucking violently to the point to where it is virtually non-drivable. There is a dramatic loss of power when this happens, and it occurs intermittently, but when it does happen, I literally have to pull over because of the loss of power. This is the first time it has ever done this, and there was a very sudden onset. Up until this morning it was running perfectly. It idles fine and revs normally when it’s not moving. I don’t hear any unusual noises.
I checked under the hood and noticed fluid in the skid pan and flung up on the underside of the hood. I use the Toyota red coolant, and although the fluid doesn’t have a strong odor of coolant, it has a reddish tinge and I noticed that the coolant overflow reservoir is lower than it was a few days ago.
I was going to check the water pump to see if there was leakage, but I’m dressed up for work and won’t be able to do so until tonight. Could I have had a sudden timing chain issue, such as jumping a tooth? The chain was replaced not more than 20K miles ago. Could it be a fuel or spark issue? I’m sure there could probably be several potential causes, but the fact that it came on so suddenly and it is throwing coolant out makes me wonder if there is a connection, or perhaps secondarily if the violent bucking of the drive train caused a water pump issue or coolant leak.
This is my only means of transportation, so I could really use your help on this.
