Be careful about using polishes regularly on clear coats. You could do more harm than good. I use a clay bar instead.

A clay bar is a great way to remove above surface contaminents, polishes(aka diminishing abraisives taht remove VERY small amounts of clear coat) are not meant for constant use, especially more agressive ones, but there are many mild things (such as meguiar's ColorX cleaner wax) which could be used more often.
If you are talking about agressive rubbing compounds of course they will remove clear coat and leave scratches. I could go into insane detail about all this but I think everyone would get really confused.
