Gas trouble

I have gotten bad gas mileage 10-12 instead of 18-22. And this issue is starting to piss me off. My dad was looking at the engine and he said i had gas leaking at the valves???? Could this be true, and if so what would need to be done to stop the leak. Thanks

FI or carb'd?

If your Dad says it is leaking at the valves, go with the experience and ask him for help. He has seen the problem. We would just be guessing.

It is EFI, we were fixin the plugs and he said he could smell the gas in the engine bay, and he saw some by the valves. So i just hope it is not to hard or time consuming. Thanks

So does anyone know how to stop the leak, get to the valves, or how much does a rebuild usually run.

Perhaps you just need a new valve cover gasket.

Not hard to replace. All you have to do is remove the valve cover, remove the old gasket, put on the new one and reinstall the valve cover.
Cost? Id bet its under $50.

Well, if you dad said its leaking "at the valves", that would be my guess. Its hard to say without actually seeing the truck in person.
Feel like driving to southern Wisconsin? LOL Id be more than happy to take a look at it for you.

Just make sure that if you have to scrape off some of the old gasket that you keep the debris out of the valvetrain.

The valve cover gasket has nothing to do with fuel. I would start with cleaning out the injectors, try a can or two of Seafoam.

This is my ritual on our Camry and will be on our Taco when it gets old. I warm the car up and then pull the vacuum line off of the brake booster, with the engine running, and suck about 1/3 of the can slowly into the intake. Do it slowly or the engine will die. Shut the engine down and wait 15 minutes, while you are waiting pour the rest of the can in the gas tank. Fire the engine up after 15 minutes and drive it around for a while, at least until it stops smoking from the Seafoam.

This will clean out the injectors, O2 sensor, etc. I would at least try it before I tore into the engine or even the injectors. Start simple and go from there.

If his dad said its leaking gas "by the valves" Im not sure how else it would leak. Its hard to really say 100% without actually seeing the truck in person.
It could be leaking by one of the injectors, he could have a pinhole in his fuel rail or it could be coming out from any number of locations.

On my dad's old accord with PGM FI ( 1 injector per cylinder) the injector seals were getting old and gas would seep out... as the fuel supply line and fuel rail would be pressurized, even after the car was off. So every time the engine was stopped, the gas would slowly seep and evaporate out.

$26 dollars worth of injector seals (one o-ring at fuel rail and 2 at the intake manifold) the problem was gone!
