Gas mileage?

I have a 85 toy with a 22re with carb. Right now I get like 20miles city and like 23 on highway. Shouldn't I get better gas mileage? I do have a brand new short block in it and I only have like 1000 miles on the motor. Also I read I should be running 91 oct. I been using 87oct.

20 with a carb? i hate you. I cant brake 16mpg. 4:10 with what size tires...
thats generally a myth that more octane = better mpg. i ran better, and faster with 87 instead of 89 or 92.

I have a 92 w/22re and it has never broken 22 mpg since brand new. I credit the automatic tranny. It has about the same effect on mileage as driving on dry sand.
