Driving Stick

I would like to know your opinion on the proper way to drive a manual transmission. Is stepping on the clutch shifting, and releasing the pedal good enough? Or is there a need to double clutch, which is from what i understand, stepping on the clutch, shifting into neutral, releasing the clutch, waiting a second, stepping on the clutch, shifting, and letting go?

Going up through the gears, clutch, shift, add some gas and unclutch is good enough.

Double clutching is mainly for downshifting.... depends on how old your car is.

Your first method works best. Just add "step on gas" as the last step so the car won't stall.

I've never driven a manual trans on a truck, but for years I had cars with it. I never "double-clucthed"... the regular process works fine. I traded in a Mazda GLC (now known as the Mazda 3) with 85,000+ miles and the original clutch!

Basically: take your foot off the gas, push the clutch pedal in, shift, relase the clutch pedal, put your foot back on the gas.
With modern manual trannys you dont need to double clutch because manual trannys nowdays have gear synchros. Back in the '70s, when trannys had straight-cut gears, you had to double clutch to match the revs otherwise you would be constantly grinding the gears.

The only thing difficult about driving a manual trans early Toyota pickup is you really have to know how to drive it, i.e. clean shifting when entering traffic because of the lack of power, having a quick clutch foot, and knowing how long to hold revs to get the most power out of the motor...

As already mentioned - double clutching is generally unnecessary nowadays because modern manual transmissions have working synchronizers.

It doesn't hurt to know how to double clutch, though... If something goes bonkers with your tranny - especially if a synchro gets weird on you - it might be handy to know how to double clutch to work around it.

Even with synchros, I still double clutch when doing rapid downshifts (to rev the engine back up to better mesh and more smoothly decelerate when I engage the next-lower gear...).
