I have an 87 toyota pickup with the 22-RE it just won't start. I have fuel, and the air passage isn't blocked. I know for a fact that it doesn't have spark. This all started when I installed a MSD ignition, the truck ran great for about a week and then slowly started cutting in and out rapidly. So I switched back to the stock ignition and the symptoms were the same. The next day it wouldn't start period. I had an extra computer that I installed and the truck started fine, I let it run for about 10 minutes and shut it off...went to start it the next day and once again, no start.
So far I have checked:
Changed coil/igniter pack and difference,
Changed ECU as above.
Checked for fuel, and have it.
Checked MAF and seems to be ok
Checked EFI main relay just fine
Please anyone have any ideas..
Thank you in advance.

Uuuugh. These types of problems can be hard to trace down. I hope you are not frying computers.
First off, everybody that I know who has switched to an MSD setup (both japanese and american vehicles) have ALWAYS had problems with them. Usually they end up frying the control unit. There is a reason why oem ignition systems are expensive.....because they're effective and reliable, for the most part.
Have you pulled any codes from the computer? Simple things to check for is proper battery voltage. Make sure it's over 12.6 volts without the motor running. Anything below this and the computer won't wake up. Check and clean the battery terminals. I have fixed virtually all of my electrical problems just by cleaning the battery cables and terminals. Next, check all electrical aspects of the distributor such as the cap, rotor, spark plug wires for proper resistance, and the signal generator. I'm wondering if the hotter spark "finished off" somthing dealing with the distributor. Check all wires dealing with the coil/ignitor. One other suggestion is to check the circut opening relay, but I doubt this is your problem.
The most common symptom of a bad distributor on a 22re is that the motor will start and run ok until it warms up, then it'll either run like crap or stall. Let the motor cool and the above will occur again. Somtimes the result is that the motor won't start at all. It's a gamble.
One other symptom that I have is that the Tach needle doesn't bounce at all...before any of this mess started the tach would bounce around a bit when the truck would be turning over. The check engine light does come on but fades out after about 5-10 seconds. I have a new cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs and I have cleaned the terminals quite well. I have 12+ volts at the B+ terminal in the check connector.
qsd-dan what do you mean by the circuit opening relay?

Hi, I too own a 87 toyota pickup and just a few weeks ago this same thing happened to me. I don't know much about mechanics, but I have been working with a mechanic that does not specialize in Toyotas but we have tried the ignitor and the coil and neither is making a difference. Reading the forum, I was curious if your truck is fuel injected or carberated? A computer is mentioned, I'm not sure where that would be located. Can you help. Thanks in advance!
mine is fuel injected and the computer is located in the cab, behind the right kick panel. And I don't know what to tell you, I've changed more parts than I can actually afford, and not much is working.
Any other questions and I'll be happy to help
