Question Payload Curiosity Tacoma

my name is Tom...and I'm a noob

My buddy just bought a '99 Tacoma 4x4 xcab, with the TRD package (limited slip RR, Cool stickers, aything else?). Nice truck! He bought it to put a 4wheel pop up camper on and go to Baja. Unless I'm reading the manual wrong it has less payload (750lbs with two people up front) than the'99Tacoma xcab 2x Pre-Runner non TRD(1050 lbs. with two people up front). Is that correct?? Why?? Also, what all does the TRD package give you?

Needless to say my buddy is a little concerned with his unloaded, 750lb. pop up camper.
is there such a thing as a non-TRD 4x4 that would have that 1050lb. payload?? Has anyone out ther put an add a leaf, or an extra leaf on a 99 tacoma TRD??

I put my pop up and every piece of water sports equipment I own on my 93 T-1OO 4x4. It goes anywhere...as long as theres waves at the end of the road...

My buddy with no computer appreciates your returns..... Tomas Tierra

Why is the sr5 different??

Is there a difference between the SR5 and the TRD package regarding payload?

Not completley sure, but from what I understand, the TRD is for street preformance, and the SR5 is for offroad preformance. Then again, might be the exact same thing.

TRD has more off road oriented components.

I wonder if the rear end is different on the TRD and can't handle the weight...seems strange they would dress it up, charge you more, and make it less of a truck

No. The TRD Off-Road Package gets you things such as Bilstein shocks, locking rear differential and skid plates. Its all about off-road capability.
The SR5 is basically the mid-level model. It gets power windows, power locks, and all the other bells 'n whistles.
750 pounds payload sounds very low for a Tacoma. Id say it should be closer to 1200-1500 pounds.

Cap..

I thought the payload would be more in the 1000 pound range at least but according to the manual...750 for the trd4x4, and 1050 for the pre runner no TRD no 4x4...strange? I;m going over to look at the manual again ...TT

That link was the specs for an '04 Xtracab 4x4 V6. The springs for the 4x4 and for the TRD are the same (the only real difference is shocks, rear locker and skid plates) so it should have the same payload.

No your wrong on TRD G

If you where to try and duplicate the TRD pkg its would be $4500 dollars!!! Bislstein shocks, a real axle LOCKER not limited slip ARB sells these and costs bout $1700 to have one put in but toyota included this how cool! Also heavy duty springs a big plus,31 inch tires alum wheels, for an extra $2500 you can get a TRD supercharger. There are a few more goodies included with the pkg. TRD is the only way to go on a used yota i think there worth much more.

POP up camper?

There is a difference in payload and towing, pl is all the equipment in the truck people and weight. These trucks are built right strong axles and stuff i cant see why you couldnt go more. Thing my towing rating is 3500lbs or is it 5k cause i got the Auto and tranny cooler not sure. Just bought a new 05 jeep liberty CRD diesel its rated bout the same.

Its 3500 pounds is the standard towing rating. If you have a V6 and the towing package you can tow as much as 6500 pounds.
