80K Check Engine Light on Tacoma V6

My 1995 Tacoma V6 5spd just hit 80,000 miles on the way to work this morning. I drove it at lunch to get some food and the Check Engine Light (CEL) came on.

Is this something that happens at 80k miles, like maintenance or an O2 sensor?

If so, how do I reset it?

Thanks....!

You need an OBD scanner. Thats the only way to clear out the trouble codes. An OBD scanner will tell you what the problem is.
If you dont have one, you can go to AutoZone and they will check the codes for free.

I read an article about '94 & '95 Toyota's....some use OBD II. I know OBD II is standard for all '96 & newer cars...but how do I find out if my 1995 is OBD II?

Also, it seems pretty unusual that I hit 80,000 and all of a sudden the CEL comes on. I truly believe it is a maintenance item, such as O2 sensor. Anyone know for certain before I get the code scanned?????

Yeah, OBD 2 is what I meant. It basically reads the trouble codes that are on your onboard diaognostic computer.
It could be any number of things, the easiest way is to take it down to AutoZone and get it scanned. They wont charge you anything to check the codes.
That way you will know for sure whats wrong with it and you will know the best way to fix it.

SO it is OBD II....then where do they plug it in at? passenger side/driver's side? Under the hood, there is a diaognostic port. I don't believe that is OBD 2....but I could be incorrect.

And I still remember somewhere that at 80k miles the CEL comes on for emission maintenance. Oh, it's a California truck....

OBD II was standard by 1995.

The OBD II connector is under the dash on the driver's side, toward the center of the truck.

There's a big connector labeled "Diagnostic" on top of the engine, but that's not an OBD II port. Another Toyota diagnostic tool connects there.

AWESOME....! I will head to Auto Zone this week. I took the Infiniti to work today, so the Taco is just sitting gracefully in the garage.

Thank you.

Thank you so much for the OBD II advice. Took it to Auto Zone....just as I thought. Replace O2 sensor. Guess there's multiple o2 sensors on the v6...the code said driver side. CEL is off now.... maybe it will stay off..
