transmission problem?

I just bought a 92 4x4 4 cylinder pickup. The truck seems to be in great shape except in 3rd and 5th gear there is this high pitched airy noise when i step on the gas. There is no noise in 4th gear. Does anyone know what this is?-

Sounds like some kind of leak? Really sounds like an exhaust leak to me, but the fact that it only happens in certain gears is kindof confusing. I guess the best thing to do is check your exhaust, and then check your hoses for leaks.

well, a while ago, my transmission blew, and in 1, 2 and 3 gear it had loud clinging sounds, but not in 4th & 5th tho. did you check if the noise is coming from the transmission. I'm not a transmission machinic too so, i think it best if you get it check by one. i guess if they are just checking and not fixing i don't think they'll charge any fees, i mean just have them run it into 3rd gear.

Eh, most of the time they will charge just for using up their time, but in most cases it wont be more than $20
