Question rear end makes a howling sound

Hello I have a 1984 Toyota pickup, rear wheel drive

At higher speeds the rear end makes a howling sound.

I’ve narrowed it down and I’m 99% sure it’s worn

gears in the differential carrier, instead of replacing bad gears

Someone told me to buy another carrier from a wrecker

And replace the entire thing.

My question is if I replace the carrier with a good one

Is that likely to solve the problem?

or is there anything more in the axle that could be

contributing to the sound?

Well, it would definately be worth checking the axle bearings as they can give the same symptoms. Much cheaper and more common of a problem unless you have an ungodly amount of miles on it or it has been abused to hell. Have you checked or changed the gear oil latley? I know people with 600,000 miles on the original rear end on these trucks

Thanks for the reply.
My manual is hardly covering anything
To do with this problem

It has 182,000 k.
It makes the howling sound only when accelerating.
I’ve changed the oil still no improvement. The truck
has bean doing this since I got it.
For checking the axel bearings do I have to take everything
apart or is just checking for play enough?

Uh-oh, sounds like you are correct with your diagnosis. I have found an interesting article that may prove that you are correct.
