Question deckplate mod questions

i know this has been talked about before, but i want to clear up some of my confusions with you guys since you seem to know alot about this. I am thinking of taking out the elbow of the filter box for increased air flow and power. Is this whats called the deck plate mod, or is the deckplate mod more advanced like cutting a larger opening or something. Another question is that ive read before that you need to pull out the EFI fuse when doing this. How long will it need to be out? can i drive with it out without it affecting the truck? And also, id like to know how big of a hole i can cut without going too big. And pics would be appreciated to help me try to do this without screwing up my truck.

O yea, it has the 22re in it also.

thanks

so i just pull the EFI fuse and let it idle for 10-15 mins and that'll re-set the code or whatever for the new rapid flow?? or do i remove it before working on the air box for safety? Im not sure exactly when i should take out the fuse. I was taking a look at it today, and it doesnt look hard to do. I think i will remove the elbow and the piece in front of the air box, and cut the hole a little larger and put a screen on the inside of the hole to block the leaves/large bugs out before the filter. How does that sound? Do you guys think itll work?

Adam, Cutting a hole in front of the box is not a good idea unless you have a way to cover the hole . On bad rain days or off road water will get in the filter box. That's why most people use the deck plate.

If you remove the elbow there is nothing to be gained by useing another hole or deck plate. There is only so much air that will go through the filter no matter what you do. Test were done useing the deck plate and elbow removed and just the deck plate and just the elbow removed . There was very little difference at all.
I just took out the box and the elbow and then removed and cut off the elbow so that it just fit inside the outer ring of the air box. You will have to trim off a couple of little tabs on the side of the elbow and mine had one small rivet I had to remove , You'll see what I mean if you take it out..... Then I placed a small screen on the inside of the box where the elbow once fit through it and used silicone sealer to hold on the screen. Then I placed a piece of 1/4" hardware screen in the opening at the finder wall to keep critters out of the engine compartment.
After re-installing the box I can snap in the elbow or snap it out anytime I want to. It took a little trimming and I just went slow untel I got it to work perfectly.
There is no need to pull the sensor or fuse or anything else. In most cases it will reset itself but if it doesn't run right after about 5 minutes then you can just pull off the battery cable and let it sit for a few minutes. Mike

Instead of taking off the elbow, the front of the elbow has a little lip on it that curves downward for under bumper air to go into the airbox. Take a razorblade or knife and cut that lip off so that it will be just a round hole. That should provide a slight increase in airflow. I wouldn't advise taking out the elbow right away.

Ok ill see what i can do. I was contemplating buying a jeep cherokee, but it sold out from under me today, so i guess ill keep my truck for awhile. I liked the jeep because it had more power and more ROOM in it than my standard cab truck.

Takeing out the elbow is not a problem and the way I did it you can snap it back in whenever you want. Don't know why you think this is not advisable. It has been done by some of the best mechanics around and it has also been tested and documented as I stated above.
You can not just have a hole without being able to close it when in dusty or wet areas. The deck plate mod was used so that you can close it when you want.
There is no need to reset your EFI fuse because if you had to do that then you would have to do it every time you closed or opened the air hole. Believe me the method I described above works great but you can do it as you want. Mike

If you read my post correctly, I said not advisable RIGHT AWAY. He has other options, so he might not want to do that. Let him decide and just go forward with it. If he wants to do it, then no harm done.

i have taken the elbow and the front piece (one directly behind the headlight) out. I put it all back together, and theres just a hole there now. It sounds cool on hard throttle and i really like it. What should i do to cover the hole now -such as a deckplate, but a dont know where/how to get one, or can i make one. What is it made out of so that the rain & dust cant get past it? any other ways to cover it. I dont plan on doing any offroading for now, so i am not too worried about mud YET. Id like to have peace of mind though just in case. Like i said, its jsut a hole there for now, and i know its not a safe setup, so what is my next move?

No rain or water will get in through the hole where the elbow used to be... unless you are trekking through some very deep water holes, but by then you'll have other things to worry about. No one, as far as I know, has had any problems with the elbow mod. As for the dust, that's why you have your air filter for!!!!
