Metal Shavings, UGHHHHHHH!

If you haven't been following the thread on the throw out bearing grinding, let me catch you up to speed. I replaced the motor in my friends 91 4x4 P/U. The first time I started it I had a nasty metal on metal grinding noise that sounded like it was coming from the front of the motor. After searching with a stethascope and finding nothing I concluded that it was a faulty TOB and pulled the tranny to investigate. After pulling the tranny and finding nothing I concluded that it was a bad rebuild with faulty thrust bearings. At that point the truck sat for two months until I had time to tinker with it again. I started to pull the motor again and upon pulling the harmonic balancer found metal shavings. The balancer was rubbing against the oil pump housing. At this point I don't know if I had it too tight or if something else is aray. Please help as i'm ready to push it off a cliff and tell him to collect the insurance.

When you installed the balancer did you remember to include the thrust washer that goes behind it? This is a large washer with a notched area for the shear pin. If you failed to install this thrust washer (t-belt guide) on the end of the crankshaft before installing the balancer it is very likely that you ran the balancer on too far which would cause the problem you explained.

Ok, let me refraze that....When you did the over haul and re-installed the t-belt did you remember to install the t-belt guide on the front of the crankshaft timing belt sprocket? It looks like a large washer.

Also, did you use the original balancer that was on the engine before the overhaul was done?

Hope this helps you out! Keep us posted!

Thanks for the replys, but I found the problem. BTW Hermit, these motors don't have a TB they have timing chain and not washer. I can see where your coming as the FWD motors have a timing belt and washer. Thanks for the reply.

There is a dust cover for the oil pump on the back side of the Harmonic Balancer. It is pressed on and some how this one wasn't flush with the HB and caused it to rub. I knocked it back on, reassembled the car and now the noise is gone. I do have a new noise now though, or an old noise that was drowned out by the metal on metal sound. When the clutch petal is disengaged, there is a rubbing sound coming from the clutch area. Would a clutch that is not adjusted right make that sound? When you push in the clutch the sound goes away and from what I can tell, when you're driving it doesn't make that sound. Question #2: Do Toyota's have a noisy valve train or should the valves be adjusted on a rebuilt motor? Most long blocks that I have replaced come with the valves adjusted already.

I think he assumed that you had the 3.0 v6 which has a timing belt and a washer.

Uh-oh....Sounds like it's tranny rebuild time. Most likley the noise you are hearing is the input shaft bearing starting to take a crap. Normally I would say replace the throw out bearing first to rule it out, but you have already done that.

I wouldn't trust anybody adjusting my valves. Definately readjust them. According to the toyota manual, you adjust the vavles hot at .008 on the intake and .012 on the exhaust. I have had luck adjusting them cold at .007 on the intake and .011 on the exhaust. The is actually how they were adjusted at the factory from what I hear.

Did you replce the pilot bearing when you changed out the throw out bearing. This could be a possible canidate to your noise.
