cold start issue

Ive got some sort of cold start problem on my 87 pickup.

If I try to jump in and turn the key it will have to crank for several seconds before the engine spits and sputters to life, then eventually will run normally...

But if I get in crank the engine for 1 second or less (not expecting it to start) then go to key off and THEN go to start then engine it will fire up like a champ and run normally.

So far the only thing Ive been able to find is somebody telling me something about a cold start injector. ANybody have any info on this of row it works?

Thanks

What engine? 4 cyl-6cyl? Fuel injection or carb? You also stated that it eventually runs normal. Does it run really shitty for a while when you first start it cold? Does it only happen with a cold start condition?

Post some stats and I will see if I can come up with any tips or answers. I'll pick my ole brain a bit. I'm sure we can come up with some suggestions.

I updated my sig with the truck info...

If I let it soak for 6-8 hours and jump in a start on the first key cycle it would probably take 7-10 seconds total to run just fine.
If I do my key cycle trick before starting it runs perfect from the go.

^^^ Im having a hard time not making this sound confusing

I have seen worn plugs cause this condition as well as a dirty fuel filt.
Another thing to check would be the priming curcuit which is your cold start injector and the cold start injector timing switch.
To check the cold start injector the engine must be cold. Start the engine and listen to the cold start injector located on the air intake chamber. you should hear a clicking noise which means the injector is working. After the truck reaches normal operating temp the clicking should stop.

I hope some of this helps you out!
