Bad TPS and Shift Solenoid E???

2002 Tacoma v6 D-Cab 59,944mi

I had the codes from my computer read at AZ because the check engine light on the dash was on. it came back with 2 codes:

P0120 Throttle Position Sensor
P0770 Shift Solenoid E

Anyone have any experience wth a similar problem? I guess I'll just replace the TPS and see if that fixes the other problem too. Might be one of those weird cause and effect things with the errors.

Do you have any drivability problems? Hesitation, surge or eratic idle? I would clear the codes and use the truck to see if it sets a another code before making any purchases. If the light comes on again have them pull the code or codes and see if its the same thing. Then complete your diag.

These sensors are very costly and its better to be safe than sorry before spending cash on an un needed part. Keep us posted.

You're damn right they're very costly I went to the dealer and one is $268. The TPS is liekly bad and I'm going to do that then see what happens. If the codes don't happen after so many starts they should clear themselves

I guess I did forget to mention, my gas consumption is terrible. and every time I come to a stop the idle surges from 750 to about 1250. and it's gotten worse. Dunno about the shift solenoids though.

I usually hit the bone yards here and grab as many TPS switches I can find and just stick them in my tool box or pockets(free) . Then you can try it out and see if it fixes the problem. I grab more than one to be sure that I find a good one. Hey they can't all be bad .
Try it out. It really saves a bundle!

I think you're on the right track. I'm willling to bet that the faulty TPS is causing the trans to shift funky. A bad TPS with as much milage as you have is ridiculous, however. Toyota sure doesn't build them like they used to!

I had some idling and hesitation issues with my 2001. The dealership pulled the codes and said I needed a new tps. They installed it and it didn't fix the problem. From the things I have read in this forum and others like it, the EGR valve seems to cause problems like this. If I could find the damn thing I could clean it.

Well that sux I just bought one and replaced it. Why would EGR cause this? if it turns out it's not TPS I'll just e-bay my old one.

something about the valve getting dirty and not being able to open/close properly. From reading various Toyota Forums it seems to be a common problem.

Replaced TPS and WOW what a difference. Car runs like a dream now idles better when cold and hot! I recommend you replace it if the computer says it's bad.
