Price for rebuilding vs rebuild

Hi,
I have a 1995 4 Runner 3Lv6 with 150K that has a bad head gasket.I have driven the vehicle hot longer than I should have. The truck has been sitting idle for the past six months.I want to get my truck back on the road and think that with 150,000 on the odometer I should have the engine rebuilt.I was wondering if it would be more economical to have the engine rebuilt opposed to putting in a rebuild.A Jasper will cost about $5,500 with a new oil cooler installed. What should I expect to pay a rebuilder for parts and labor?
I realize that labor varies in different regions.
Thanks for any input
Danny

YIKES...that's alot of money. I have seen "used" engines for under $1000 and short/long blocks (rebuilt) in the auto trader business advertisement for $1-$2k range. For $5500, I would get rid of the truck and upgrade to a 3.4 liter 4 Runner. Good luck.

For that kind of money I would make sure a rebuild is really necessary. It would be worthwhile to get a professional mechanic's opinion.

BTW, anyone else: Is 5k the going rate for a rebuilt 3l V6? If so, when mine goes I will probably replace the truck.
