What are the steps to a paint job? i accedentally got my hood while painting my grille, and it didnt look bad, so i taped it up and made a horizontal stripe behind the grille guard, and then clear coated it once. And it looks fine. the body is already scratched up, from offroading, lol. So could i just paint my truck with 94cent spraypaint, and then a 94cent can of clearcoat? or is it more complicated than that. i dont want it to look like shit, but to be nice looking. Not show room either.

It might come out looking like shit. Are you spray painting over the original paint, or did you sand the old paint off? If you sanded the old paint off and use primer it might come out looking pretty good. What color are you painting your truck?
Step #1: Remove original paint.
Step #2: Cover what you don't want painted.
Step #3: Spray away at what you want painted.
Step #4: Wait for new paint to dry.
Step #5: Spray with clearcoat.

When i first got my truck my friends and I painted over the whole thing with 82 cent spray paint. It really looks bad, the real challange was not getting drips. We didn't waste time with clear coat. After a few years the paint is chipping and showing the primer. It was alot of fun but i would not recamend it if you want it to look even half decent.
Man i wish i had a truck that i could "touch up" with a can of gloss black spraypaint again. I would go buy your choice color and some sandpaper then sand any rust and paint. You will have to touch up once in a while but if you do it alright is should be about at 10 foot job. I dont know about the clearcoat but it might help.
You are better off going to one of the EconoPaint shops. There are many such places with different names that offer decent paint jobs for about $300. I paid $500 to get an upgraded paint job 2 years ago. I still get complimented on the looks of it.

i sprayed over the original paint, and it looked good, and i am going with the gloss black, and i only did one layer of clearcoat. But i am thinkin about doing it myself, and then if it looks bad, go and get a 300-500$ paintjob. Next week i am gonna do my hood, and see how it looks, because i need to get a new hood any way so.

check the auto parts store for the cans with the wide spray pattern. With that tip you will be able to get better coverage and the paint job will come out a lot better. If they don't have the color you want just get one can and use that tip for the color that you want.
Also the time you take preping the truck before will make all of the difference in the end.

You don't need to remove the paint but you do need to remove everything that has built up over the years. An extra fine sanding sponge and running water should do it.
