Ok, so I was on my way back from Drummond Island, about 4 hours out and 1.5 hours from home, and coming up to a 4 way stop I had to jam on my brakes. My right foot nailed the brake about a second before the left hit the clutch, and I stopped pretty hard, but in time. Taking off from the 4 way, idle was OK, but any RPM above idle was rough, with LOTS of backfiring, and chugging, and I pulled over w/ engine running at idle.
I believe that my timing got F*d up, how exactly does the timing work on a 1974 Federal model FJ40 with the stock F (155) inline 6 engine? Does anybody on here know anything about my particular vehicle or set up? Where is the timing belt, or is it a "zero tolerance" and did I really screw something up, or a minor fix?
Anything about timing systems and such, and what I might have messed up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I suppose it's possible to screw up the timing like that, but highly unlikely. I'd check the carb. Maybe the float got stuck or something. If it's off, then the truck will run like crap. Very lean if it's too low, very rich if it's too high. Lean would cause your backfires as well. Also check the other easy stuff, like plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc. just to make sure.

I would see if you can borrow a timing light from Autozone and check it. I would also do as the others said, and make sure you dont have something funny going on with your spark plug wires.
Ive venture to say that your FJ probably has a timing chain but it MIGHT have gear-driven timing. If it has a constant "whine" to it that gets louder as the rpms increase, its probably gear timing. If not, its probably chain.

The Toyota F engines are all timing gears, and I don't believe that it was messed up. I've checked all the simple stuff, including dizzy mount, wires, etc. The starter is bad, so I pulled it and will rebuild it. I needed to rebuild the carb anyways, so I'm going to completely clean and rebuild, as well as tweak it. I'll also change my oil and cut open the filter to see if there are any metal shavings in it, or other signs of something messed up. I'll start with the simple things, like carb, then work my way into the PITA things like timing (gears and spark). Thanks all, I'll get to the bottom of this eventually. Unfortunately, cherry season is coming up so free time to work and trips to Car Quest will be greatly reduced...
Cheers!
