You Know the Noise...

That your truck makes when you make a sharp slow turn. A loud bang that is metallic. What is it and how do I fix it. I remember hearing that alot of people have this. My old truck had it but it had smaller tires. Thanks.

Probably your tires rubbing on the steering stops.

Its your bumpstops. Grease them up with a little bearing grease and they'll be fine.

The cap'n is right. On the right and left front wheels you have 4 steering/wheel stops. 2 for each wheel. There are stop pans Located on the lower control arms and posts located on the lower portion of the spindles. These prevent excessive travel of your front wheels and tires while making very sharp turns. Ya know..the kind you make when your turning around, 4 wheelin or doing slow tight manuvers(turns).

The posts have plastic caps on them which eventually over time split and fall off leaving a bare, rusted end exposed. When making your sharp turn the dry post makes contact with the dry rust on the pan and it makes a loud metallic popping noise as they pinch together. It can be pretty loud at times.

The caps are cheap to buy at any local dealer and just snap on.Untill you get them replaced just cleaning this area and adding some grease or anti-seize will get rid of the noise. I would definitely replace the caps otherwise the noise will return over and over again. Just be sure to grease the new caps when you install them.

Hope this helps!

Yup, my '91 4Runner made that noise! The cure I found for the problem was not turning the wheel to full-lock!

Yeh, my 91 ext cab had the same noise. I found some rubber caps at the local bearing house, the kind that go on top of the threads of a air cylinder, and put them on and it did not make the noise any longer. Another solution a friend of mine used was to sand the rusy part and get some black rtv and put a dab on it and let it set up before driving. It quieted his down.

my 92' does this same noise on hard left turns only. Im not exactly 100% sure what you guys are talking about with the stops. If you could post a pic, or something of where the stop is, id appreciate it. (need to fix this problem , its driving me up the wall)

thanks, -Adam-
