I have a 87 yota pickup 4x4 22re and at aprox 188xxx miles the head gasket decided to take a crap on me. I bought a rebuilt head, timing set, all the gaskets, oil pump and tune up parts (cap, rotor, wires, plugs) and put it all together on the truck. Now i have a problem, the truck is running like crap and i dont exactly know why. The #1 cyl seems to be overfueling, what would cause this? a description of how its running would be similar to a vac leak, but im almost positive i have all of the leaks taken care of. It idles rough, seems down on power and like i said the #1 cyl seems to be overfueling by inspection of the spark plug. I also replaced the injectors with a set of used ones i got off of ebay thinking that the #1 injector may have been bad, but it is doing the exact same thing and it seems that only the #1 cyl is overfueling. do you think it would be the o2 sensor? By the way, before the head gasket went the truck ran great, no problems that i noticed at all, so i think it is something that happened during the head gasket install. I do know that the ex manifold is loose, two of the stud holes are stripped and i dont feel like fixing them until the truck is running better.
P.S. the cam timing seems to be right on as well so you can also rule that out.
Double check all your valve clearances. Do each valve separately with the high point of the lobe 180 deg from the rocker pad. I know you have already, but make absolutely sure the cam timing is spot on. Check your spark timing making sure you have the jumper in the check connector block. Check compression on every cylinder before and after setting the valves. Check plug wires, plugs, cap and rotor. A faulty ground path or weak spark can cause all sorts of problems. Check your throttle position sensor. If that's off it can cause rough idle and poor performance, as well as higher emissions, poor fuel economy, etc. It also affects timing, if I remember correctly. Let us know what you find.

Sounds like #1 may not be firing. Try putting the old ingition parts on. My dad had a cracked spark plug once and it took him a long time to figure out.
do you have new wires to the spark plugs? or new plugs? I just replaced my own head gasket and couldn't figure out why it was doing like you say untill I changed my cables.

hey, I'm looking at the same job on my 88 4x4.... I spoke with a neighbour today who said if you get antifreeze in your oil that the lower bearings are in danger... does anyone have experience with this????
I certianly have antifreeze in the oil, have changed it three times since the gasket blew, just for some short trips around the neighbourhood... and to take it to my cousin the mechanic today..
thanks,
