Timing 22RE

I am in the process of replacing the head gasket on my 87 4x4.This site has been a big help.1 thing that I don't understand regarding the engine timing.#1 piston is tdc, distributor rotor is pointing to #1 and the cam spocket alingnment dots are at the 12 o'clock position. The crank pulley notch, however, is no where near the 0 mark.I would say it looks as though the notch is somewhere in the 25-30 BTC area.I rotated the engine through several times to make sure #1 is on the compression stroke. The piston is TDC and both valves are closed.Am I missing something here? the truck has 150000 miles and this will be the first time the engine was apart. Not bad.Was running fine up to this point. This is my first post and any input would be great, thanks.

Assuming your crank is indeed at TDC #1, then your pulley has slipped. The outer ring is held to the inner with a rubber bit. Sometimes it can slip and move off from where it's supposed to be. Get a new one from the wreckers.

Yea,I am at TDC on#1 cyl.I was thinking that maybe the pulley did slip, but I thought the crank pulley was indexed to the crank shaft.I haven't gotten that far yet. This is my first attempt on a toyota engine,so I am going slow.Everything looks good, the cam sprocket dots are at 12 oclock, the rotor is on#1 and both valves are closed.Going to pull the head today,so I will let you know, thanks
