where is the fuel filter on a 1987 toyota pickup with the 22re engine? i need to replace mine and i cant find it. if anyone has any pictures they would help out a lot. thanks in advance.
assuming that is the same as my 85 it should be right below the intake manifold bolted towards the rear of the block. its cylinder in shape like your oil filter but a little skinnier around and slightly longer than your oil filter. its not the easiest access unless you pull the plenum but it can be done just a little akward.
Anyone know about later years? I have a '93 and all Chiltons seems to show is one in the fuel tank. That it?
Check the frame rail mid-way on the passenger side. It should be a black canister with 16mm (5/8") line fittings. Most filters have a 3/4" welded hex on each end to hold the filter in place while you loosen the lines. Spray the fittings real good and be sure that you don't twist the lines if they are frozen to the fittings.
It would not hurt to use a small brass wire brush in combination with the spray to remove any road crud and rust from the fittings before loosening them. This link may also help you out http://www.4runners.org/articles/fuelfilter/
Hope this helps! *HERMIT* the T-TECH "OH WHAT-A-FEELIN"
The filter is almost impossible to get at with the starter in place .....
First you have to find it...
You can see it if you take the passenger side fender skirt off as you would to access the oil filter. Look toward the rear, mounted to the block, behind the starter moter.
I had starter issues and elected to change the filter with the starter out. That way, I didn't need a second elbow in my arm, 5 inches up from my wrist.
Just remember, that there is still fuel in the bugger and it WILL spill out. Hopefully, the engine won't be warm either.

Good luck and Happy Motoring!

Yep, just changed it this weekend. Be sure you don't do what I did...pull out the whole starter, not just the solenoid. Dumbass me pulled just the solenoid, and it was a pain to get it back into the assembly. I also took the time to change the oil. Without the oil filter in there, the fuel filter isn't such a bad job. The banjo bolts on the filter should be tightened to 22 ft/lbs...much more will make it a hassle next time. Also make sure to replace the crush washers (should have come with the new filter).
i just did mine on my 85 efi 4x4 sr5 and it was under the intake manifold, the bolts were really tight, and trying to take it off was akward. but i got it done and it runs alot smoother.
