Oil Pan Removal

Every book I have read says to raise the engine about an inch to remove the oil pan. Nothing is mentioned about removing steering or anything else. It doesn't look to me like that alone will allow the pan to come off. Anyone done this? Do you know the best way? I have a '93 4x2 pickup.

I have removed the pan gasket on a 86 22re 4x4.If its 2 wheel drive it should be alot less trouble.I could not completely remove the pan due the front axel.I did however loosen the motor mounts and jacked up the motor as far as i could, then dropped the pan down, reached in and unthreded the pickup tube so i could get the pan gasket on the pan I did this to keep the gasket free of oil and clean.Make sure you get the edges of the pan and the block side very clean to accept the new gasket.I used the brush on high tack, this stuff allowed me to stick the gasket to the pan without it slipping around.Dont be afraid to use a little.Fact, my repair is a dry,and does not leak. This repair was due to the fack I had a cracked cover. After removeing the cover i tore the gasket. Thus a pan gasket was needed.I hope this can help you.

I have an 88 2WD and I find myself in the same situation.

There's a steering tie rod that does not allow for the removal of the oil pan.

What gets loosened and where should the jack be placed to raise the engine to allow for the oil pan to come out?

Any websites that show this being done?

I would still like to know. I followed Chiltons and it did not work. They say all you have to do is unbolt the motor mounts, jack the engine an inch by placing jack under tranny....but it wasn't enough. I ended up sliding the pan to each side to clean, then used a gasket I got from engbldr and was able to put it on without taking the pan all the way off.. It seems to have worked.

when i pulled mine on my 94 2wd i vaguely remember having my girlfriend cut the wheel all the way to one side as hard as she could. i dont have power steering and it could be different with ps?? i was able to squeeze it by without jacking anything up i did have to remove a few bolts from nderneath but i dont think it was that much. in fact t was just the crossmember on th front between the fron suspension. the steering can be left alone if you cut the weel all the way to one side.

Canada ya

I did this last fall on my 1989 toy 4wd xcab 22re to fetch my timing chain out of the oil pan. All you have to do is remove the engine mount bolts and the stabilizer bar. I had my tranny off so I'm not sure if you have to unhook anything to pull this off but that may be a consideration. I had the cumalongs attached to the roof and te engine and slowly brought it up. The only atention should be paid to the vacum hoses or whatever they are across the rear/top of the engine as they start to push against the firewall. I think you need to have the valve cover off in order to do this as well.

This is an amateur suggestion, but that is the best of my recollection.

Its an easier job on the 4x4 because it has more clearance. Subliminal seems to have the right idea. Removing the motor mounts and cross member bolts allows you to jack the motor and tranny up a bit, but all in all even though it looks like it won't come out it will, its just tricky..

Figured it out.

Easiest way to get the oilpan off a 88 4x2 is to remove the cross brace and loosen / lower the steering cross member by popping off two of the ball joints on the passenger side.
I went to my auto parts store and bought a pitman arm puller for imports. The import pitman arm puller is smaller than the regular pitman arm puller.
