Canada 4 wheel drive problem

i posted a thread a while ago, asking about hubs, and a grinding noise that occurs when mine are locked in the 4 wheel drive position. here's what I've found out since then. I took apart the hubs, and greased them, as they were a little dry. Those were definitely not the problem. I took it for a short test drive, and didn't barely leave my driveway with the hubs locked in when i heard the noise again. once again, this grinding/grating noise, only occurs when the hubs are locked into 4 wheel drive position, and usually only when the truck is in 2 wheel drive. it starts at around speeds of 10-20 kilometers an hour, and doesn't stop with increased speed. the only ways I can stop it, is unlocking the hubs. also putting it into 4 wheel drive will stop the noise, but not always. This is a 1987 toyota p/u with manual locking hubs. any help would be awesome

what the problem is ,is that the inner spindle bushings are bad ,causeing the stub axle to wobble around inside the spindle ,like a electric motor that is worn out if you have ever seen one and know the noise it makes ,only way to fix it is to replace all the bushings in the spindles or replace the whole spindle itsself and then don't drive around on the steet with the hubs locked in.

thanks, i'll check that out on monday, and yeah, obviously driving around with the hubs locked in isn't a good idea, the only time i ever do that is on the trail, when i don't need 4 wheel drive, and am too lazy to unlock the hubs, but then it's always under 50 k's, and definitely not that far. thank you very much tho

could somebody possibly inform me, what the "inner spindle bushings" might look like? or should it be pretty obvious once i pull the axle out??? its spring time, the mud is showing up, and i've gotta get my beast back off road

Just a thought.... Have you checked the oil in dif ... I know this sounds like a bullshit idea but with hubs locked in this is truning with out load on it .... as for the bearing when you pull the halfshaft you should note a seal on backside of roader which the axel slides up to this will have a bearning there as well under the seal .

When you was packing the lockout did you note and shaving in them.
