Talking Woohoo picked up a FREE '94!!!!!!!!

OK, so it ain't much to look at. It's white, it has 172,000 miles on it, but it's free and it runs great and pretty much looks like an 11 year old truck should. I didn't really need another vehicle, but no way I could turn down *free*!!!!!

Sooooooo.............I have a couple questions if y'all would entertain this newb........

#1.) Anything to know about 1994 in particular??????? (22RE motor, 5sp stick, single-cab & that's bout it)

#2.) This one is more detailed..........It's got A/C, but I noticed that even on "HIGH" the air doesn't come blowin' out of the vents like it does on any other Toyota I've owned. My first guess was that air was being lost somewhere else, but I looked as closely as I could underneath and felt everywhere I could but don't see or feel anything weird under there.

I also opened the glove box 'cuz it seemed like that's where the blower fan is (somewhere behind there) but don't see anything obvious in there either...........so my other thought was that maybe the fan's INTAKE is clogged or something??

Anyway, if anybody can shed some light or are familiar with such a situation that'd be great. A/C gets more important the older I get........LOL!!!! TIA

Congrats on your Truck. Especally on it being Free since people just don't give away a Toyota pickup. It's pratically unheard of.

Tips on the A/C system:
1) Your Blower motor is located under the glove box right next to the Passenger Kick Pannel 3 screws hold it in place.
2) If You Still have a Fan Speed issue, it is probally due to a bad Resister (Toyota Term) which is located I beleive in the Blower motor housing (Dealership Part). The Resister was known to go bad in the trucks.
3) if you desire to recharge the A/C system, The Best thing to do is Convert the Refrigerent from R-12 to 134-A.

Tips on the Truck:
1) Check Your Coolant. If it's Green Replace it with the Toyota Red Coolant. The Green Coolant has been known to eat away Head Gaskets on
22 series(22r, 22r-e,& 22tr-e) motors.
2) Inspect your muffler. The Exhaust pipe between the muffler and Cat have been known to Rust away completely on most Pickups.

Good luck and enjoy your truck

I don't understand why green would eat away head gaskets on just 22r motors. Any other makes and modela have this problem? Or, is it just the gaskets they used at the factory? Seems someone was on here the other day saying the green will clog the passageways. Urban myths?

If you can hear the blower running its ass off and theres still not much air coming out the vents it is common for the A/C evaporator to leak oil into itself and gather dust and crap till it cakes and blocks airflow.

pull the blower resister out and peek into the box with a flashlight to see if theres a lot of dirt Built up on the evaporator.

The only fix it to change it out.

Cool, thanks very much guys!!!

Ya, this particular guy actually thought it was in worse shape than it was. I went thru it a bit......(still gotta pull the wheels off & check the brakes & stuff but...) it looks pretty good. I completely degreased the motor and she's a purrrty lookin' 22RE!

Lil'Red..........DEFINITELY doin' red coolant ONLY!!!

Check this out.............I had a go'round with Toyota once where I brought my '98 Camry in for the FULL (and I meeeeeean FULL) tuneup. (Yes, I forked over some $$ but just didn't feel like doin' much myself sooo)......anyway, they did timing belt, cam seal, some gaskets, water pump etc. etc. (stuff that's harder than replacing an air/oil filter)......and I get the thing back and it's got GREEN COOLANT in it!! I went back the next day & said........"WTF!!!!!!!!!". I own a TOYOTA, not a Chevy S10!! Now I want you to FLUSH the green completely out of there and refill with RED!!!!!!! (They did and apologized but said they consider it normal practice when the customer doesn't specify............talk about A-holes!!!!!!!!!!)

But I'm over it now............(a few anger management classes later......LOL!!!!)

And thanks to smasher for the tip on the "clogged" evaporator. That sounds like EXACTLY what it's doing. Blows like a mofo (especially when I switch to 'recirc' air) but not much comes out and I really can't see or feel any leaks anywhere.

Now my next question would be...............where's the evaprator located & how do I pull it to look at it???? (A/C's still nice & cold just not much pressure behind it)

Thanks to all again and YES........I consider myself VERY lucky. Since it's high mileage and worn a bit I probably wouldn't pay more than a grand for it, but a grand is a nice donation from a friend/co-worker!!

Oh......and here's some P-I-C-S ------------------------------

Okay........just took her down to the local dealer to have the coolant flushed & filled.

Coolant was pretty much just water with very little trace of coolant at all. A little dirty, but didn't see any rust and the cooling system's definitely still keeping the engine quite cool, so hopefully the red will get in there and make harmony.

(Sidebar)--------> From what I remember about the RED vs. GREEN argument.........(we had a pretty in-depth argument years ago over at Camryman.org).........it's basically what the RED *doesn't* have in it (IIRC) that makes it a little better. Green, changed regularly, would probably be fine, but RED sitting in a cooling system for long stints of time does much better than green in the same environment. In a nutshell Toyota RED is silicate-free and borate-free which appears to be better......(I won't pretend to know why).........as opposed to low-cost GREEN.....(there are premium greens out there similar but not your basic cheap stuff).

I even recall a time when (don't know if they do it anymore).......Toyota used to drain your old coolant & keep it handy & when they were done doing whatever work needed to be done, they'd put it right back in..........(I knew, then, that this stuff might be better than average).

Geeez Loueeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzz some of the prices they want for this crap is ridiculous!!!!

The gal called me back to say it's ready & full of RED coolant.......(yippeee) and the guy who worked on it suggested a few things.........

Alternator & A/C belt -------------->$120

A/C unit -----------------> $260

Brake fluid replaced (dirty) ---------->$90

Are they freakin' kidding???????????

I thought I'd heard some laughable prices in the past, but this is just killin' me!

For $90, I'll bleed & refill brake lines w/ fresh fluid ALL DAY LONG..........Hell, I'll even flip for the fluid.

And $120 for a couple belts?? WTF kinda' belts they usin'.........KEVLAR???????

Sorry........I just had ta' laugh a bit there. That's just too much for me. I told 'em to go pound sand. I'll teach my 5 year old how to change a couple belts & bleed brake lines. The A/C is just fine! Holy Moly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, need some URGENT help here..................

Picked up the truck.........coolant's all nice & RED!!!

Now..........

If I change the belts, I can easily see how to get the fan/alt belt off by doing a typical "swingaway" on the alternator, but on the A/C/main belt..........the little idler pulley there (which looks like the logical place) doesn't have enough play to get the belt out of the way........(unless maybe I reeeeeally coax the belt w/ a screwdriver?) and the A/C compressor looks like a friggin' beeeehotch to take off completely.

Is there an easier way to get the A/C/main belt off????

TIA!!

I meant to quote you but I hit EDIT instead NM that I didn't change anything

Have you considered just cutting the belt off, then loosening up the pully with the belt out of the way?

Ya, I actually thought about that but dunno what the heck I'd do if I can't get the new one on..........LOL!!!! (That'd really suck!!)

I guess worst case scenario would be to just have to take all the bolts off mounting the A/C to its mount. But that would reeeeeeeeally kinda' suck 'cuz there's three bolts total and one of 'em's waaaay back in there.

What happened to the days of changing the belt on a Volkswagen Bug???

Maybe if somebody has a Haynes manual, could you check & see the method they suggest??

(I'll probably pick up a Haynes this weekend anyway 'cuz I think I'm gonna have some fun diggin' in this puppy!)

OK, so I'm confused. After thinking maybe there was nothing on the subject, I finally found the part in the Haynes manual........

(I went & bought one today for the '79-'95 Toyota pickups)

...........I find the part that talks about inspecting, testing and/or replacing belts. Well, they talk about it alrighteee.......about as much as saying, "change the belts"!!!

Now, folks, that's pretty sad!! It does mention, in brief, that some components can typically be moved away (i.e. my earlier comments about alternator "swing-away") but that's about it. Are they kidding??

They go into uber-detail about measuring deflection or describing the 18 different types of belt fatigue, but fail to mention in even *half* that much detail about changing the belts. Maybe I'll be cutting that belt off after all??

Well, after passing the weekend having a total blast in my new '94 (new to me ) I have to say that it sends me waaaay back. I love the simplicity. No power steering. No power windows, locks, extra sensors, etc. etc. Just clean & simple!

I actually found (by searching on some other stuff) that the AutoZone online manual was even better than the friggin' Haynes manual I bought.

(I have to say that I'm not really impressed this particular Haynes manual and already found a few discrepancies..........not good!)

Anywhooo...........the autozone online manual page about replacing belts was MUCH better/thorough than the Haynes. I don't easily see a way to swivel the A/C unit out of the way, but between that & the idler pulley, it looks like that's what I'm gonna have to do.

Prolly gonna have to have it smogged too once I get over to the DMV (change ownership) so I'm hesitant to change stuff like the PCV/EGR/EVAP but wondered if anybody had any opinions on it or if I should just wait & see if it fails smog before messin' with 'em. ???

Well, just a hint for anybody who's up against what I was up against today..........FORGET ABOUT CHANGING YOUR BELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could not BELIEVE what I was up against today. Loosened the idler pulley & guess what..........YUP........NOT EVEN CLOSE to loosening the belt enough to take it off!!!!

A/C unit had to come completely off. Well, the bottom rear bolt on that A/C unit is in one of the more ridiculous places I've seen bolts before, but I tried & simply ran out of light. To top that off, the front bolts won't even come off 'cuz the A/C pulley is in the way..........WTF????

So, essentially you have to remove all the bolts, then pull the A/C unit forward to allow the bolts to release from their holes and move the A/C unit. Now, the rear belt for the alternator would be cake, but I can't remove it unless I remove the front one (or cut it off), so looks like this behotch it going to my local guy & I'll throw him a few bucks under the table & see what he can do with or if he actually feels like pullin' the A/C unit off. (Maybe it'll be easier for him on a lift).

Anyway, needless to say I find that quite ridiculous........(My Camry's brakes are easier to do than these friggin' belts!) What a joke!

OK...........rant over!!
