starter contacts?

When i try to start my truck(89 22re) it sounds like a clicks several times very fast like a machine gun. if I jump the battery it starts fine. is this the contacts? why does it still start when being jumped?

Is the starter relay clicking?...or the starter itself?

I just recently had this problem, when I tried to start it I got nothing but a click from the relay. Eventually I got the clicking as you are describing (machine gun)...this noise was from the starter relay.

After I got home with a pushstart (that was fun ) I thought my problem was my starter, so I took it off, went down and had it tested. Came out fine. I also took the solenoid apart and checked the contacts and they seemed fine. So, my problem was with the battery contacts. I cleaned up the terminals and reconnected everything and it started fine.


Even though the battery connections may seem okay (all electrical works....lights, radio, etc..) when that starter pulls more amps, the connection is not good enough. This explains why yours starts when being jumped...because you are bypassing the bad terminal connections on your battery with the jumper cables to the other battery...


So, I say take your connectors off your battery and clean them up along with the terminals....also make sure the ground to the block is good and the hot connection to the starter is good.

Good advise above.

You might also consider having a shop perform a load test on the battery. Many will do this for little or no money.

If it flunks a load test, it's time to replace the battery.

Yea, I forgot to mention that. Most autoparts stores will do all these testings for free (at least mine does)...

Check the easy stuff (connections) first before you go and yank that starter like I did. I made more work for myself. BUT, with that starter out of the way it seemed easier to change my fuel filter. I would really like to know why Toyota had to put that fuel filter in the worst spot possible... oh well

If you get the dreaded "click" every now and then with two or three turns of the key and then it starts fine, could this also be a bad starter relay ? Mike

It is probably the contacts. There are a variety of starter contacts too. You will need to take them out of your starter and into the parts dept to get the right match.


My truck was doing the same thing several months ago then quit doing it. I have no idea why either. Magic? LOL

Whether your starter uses two rectangular types or one rectangular and one crescent you can substitute with two squares or one square and one crescent so any of the above part #'s for those kits will be the right ones,or about half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages would sell aftermarket contacts for only $5 each or the pair.

If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.

well it's acting up again. i'm almost ready to give up and take it to my mechanic. when i try to start it and it doesn't i get a clicking noise from the starter and a clickish noise in the dash of the passenger side thst almost sound like a loud turn signal type noise. now what... i was thinking of take the starter out to get tested but its really hard to get at and i'm not possitive that is my problem. could it be a relay switch? i had another truck that wouldn't start and we replace the relay switch and that fixed it. also people have been suggesting it may be the selinoid? i'm stumped here. any help would be greatly appreciated.

this evening i replaced the starter contacts and cleaned the plunger. it starts better than before. SWEET!!!
