Ok ive been researching intakes for the 22R-E the main prob for me is quite frankly i dont haven enough money for the product and shipping so im screwed. Plus im afraid of sucking up water(rains alot here). So one day i decided to see what i could do with my stock system. At first glance you can see the airbox is not hooked up to the fenderwall so i cant do that deck plate mod. Instead the airbox is connected to this plastic thing which is attached to the headlight. Hmmmm.... i started out by removing the plastic thing. I noticed there is a pipe sticking out of the airbox hmm. I removed the top of the airbox and took out the airfilter then looked inside. Inside lies an angled pipe. I then removed all the bolts holding the airbox in place. Once out i removed the 2 pins holding the pipe and took out the pipe. Now if u hold the bottom half of the airbox with the hole facing you you will notice a circular indented impression on the air box hmmm i used a propane tiki light flame regulator and a propane tank to heat up a kitchen knife then slowly and carefully cut out another hole from the circular cut impression. Let the cut out cool and sand down the rough edges apply some screen i used house window screen in front of the 2 holes to prevent large debres from coming in. your best bet is to outline the hole with Crazy glue then put the screen on electrical tape wont hold. Now reasseble everything back together dont forget the airfilter! and test it out. I Cant promise 10 hp increase or 12 sec quarter miles with this nor a show acceptable mod. The thing sounds great though. I have hiflow exhaust too(ghetto and a joke) Good Luck and yeah i will clean my engine bay sooner or later.

i did the exact thing to my 92' and it does sound sweet. I did everything you did except without the screen in the hole. Sounds cool on acceleration and it feels like it gave me a little top end power.

it is not "Hacking Up". Its worth the 15 minutes it takes to get a little power out of these underpowered trucks. Gives noticable top end power and sound. Im not exactly sure why you look down upon it. Maybe if you gave it a try, youd become a believer. we are not hoping on HUGE gains, but just a little bit is good enough for a free modification.
Rogerman- Nice exhaust system. Looks like its time for a flowmaster. lol

Hey man i mentioned that the gains are not impressive alrite what im focusing on in this thread is the sound the intake makes read what i said. You just might be right about the zero gains in all but its Free and just the beginning.

Its your truck...do what you want. Its still hacking it up for no reason. There are no performance gains from what you did. So why do it?
