Question Starting Problems

Hi,

I have a 87 toyota 4runner sr5 and have been having major starting problems. I have checked for the nessecities like spark, fuel, air, and have them all. I am about to drop the gas tank and change out my Fuel Pump but I dont think thats the problem.

The problem started after my Altinnator took a crap on me which I have replaced alond with the spark plug wires, spark plugs, coil, and soon to be fuel pump. I have ran lines off of the fuel hose and pressure hose and get both when the ignittion is turned. My only conclusion is that perhaps the problem is in the computer system but cannot get it down to the mechanic shop to run diagnostics. My main question is this... Can anyone help perhaps point me in the right direction if they have had a simular problem. Im not a very knowledgeable mechanic and am quiet new to this. So anything will help.

Thanks,
William

The best thing to do before you replace anymore parts is to make sure that when you replaced the alt., every thing went back together the correct way.

Make sure that both of the alt. wires are connected.

You did not say if it is efi or carb. I am assuming that it is efi if you are going to drop the fuel tank for the fuel pump... With that said, check that the intake hose is fastened at both ends the efi's do not like to run if there is a vacume leak.

Also check your fuses, I do not like to spend money on parts ontil I know that they are bad, it is a lot cheaper to do a little diag. than to keep replacing parts, hoping that one will fix it.

I would back track. What I mean by that is put everything back that worked before. mainly the spark plug wires, coil. See if you can start it up then. if you get it started change the old parts out with the new one by one to see which part caused the problem. Some time by changing just the plugs you would need to retime the engine.

Thanks for the response guys.

It does have an EFI setup in it. I will try out some of your suggestions and respond back with the solutions
