Clutch pedal noise

Hi,

I've got a 98 4Runner, 4 cylinder, manual transmission. 100k miles. The clutch pedal makes a funny noise, like a screen door spring. It also is a little mushy at the top end, doesn't just pop back up.

No transmission noise, chatter or problems shifting. Plenty of fluid in the master cylinder reservoir. No lateral play on the pedal itself. The pushrod going through the firewall has a little play.

I presume a bearing or bushing is gone in the spring area.

Any suggestions?

take a look at the clutch pedal mounting bracket, in particular where the bracket is attached to the firewall. there are some spot welds that can break loose and cause the problems you're describing. it's a pain in the arse to get up under there, but i was able to fix the problem in no time with my little wire-feed welder.

Was it really cold outside? My truck make the same noise, during the winter times.
