Exclamation Emergency: Need Advice on emptying a 2002 Forerunner's tank

Hello, first post here on behalf of my bro-in-law who just purchased a 2001 or 2002 Forerunner last week and on a cross-country trip an hour ago he filled the tank with diesel. He drove off, obviously it ran really badly, and now he is in a motel in St Louis waiting for some garage to figure out how to remove the diesel. He bought a siphon pump of some kind but was unable to start any siphon action.

Can someone tell me what is involved in emptying a Forerunner gas tank? Can it be done without removing it, as the garage attendant kept saying would probably have to be done? Thanks a lot for any quick advice...I will be monitoring this thread for awhile to see if anyone can provide perspective, thanks again.

There should be a drain plug on the bottom of the tank.

Hey that is great news, thanks. I wasn't sure if the newer models had done away with them.

Well, it was a good thought . Apparently there is NOT a drain plug on Forerunner tanks of that year...the garage said they could not find one so I called a local Toyota dealership and they confirmed. FYI.

newer cars have a mesh or wire screen in the filler neck to prevent people from siphoning out your gas. you could push something down the filler neck and punch a hole in that screen, although you might get little bits in to the fuel, which would suck. also, it is really not that hard to remove a fuel tank. you could do it in a parking lot if you had to. you would just have to make sure you covered the groung under the car with plastic, and didn't let any fuel get onto the ground. fuel tanks are not that hard to remove, and any mechanically inclined person can do it. jut disconnect and cap off the fuel lines, filler neck, whatever connections are holding the fuel tank in. make sure that you have something like a jack or two under the fuel tank holding it up, than carefully lower it down and siphon the fuel int gas cans. make sure to get all the diesel out and rinse the tanks with gas. remember not to spill.
