Im looking into getting a toyota pickup in the year range 88-94. I was wondering whats the max amount of miles itll be able to handle before having to get parts replaced, dying out, etc. I see some trucks for sale that have 230+k miles on them and are kind of expensive for that much, can the engine really last more than that? These trucks are kind of rare and since there age most of the have a lot of miles. I would say the average ive seen is probably 140k, which sounds like a lot right there, and there still 5-7k. How much should i expect to pay to get a decent one with decent miles on it? Thanks.
if its well kept, itll last way over 200K. These old trucks have bulletproof motors. (underpowered, but bulletproof) The only major thing would be a timing chain replacement at 130K or so. Mines got 165,000 runs well. Previous owner had chain done at about 130,000. Just make sure if you do get one, to keep up on maintenance and use only TOYOTA oil filters. Other brands have a cheap check valve which is helpful on getting oil to the motor on startup. Cheap check valve = no oil on startup. When you go to check out one, make note of if its a V6 or 4 cyl. If its a 4, ask if it recently had the chain done. (excessive noise usually occur on chains that have no guides) ( the problem is that the guides guiding the chain break off and chain wears hole in engine = trouble) If its a V6, some had bad head gaskets. Ask if that was done. The v6's have timing belts so the guides arent as bad a prob. on the V6's.
If you have one in mind, get some info. or pics, and post it here.

Not that it is in the year range you are looking for (88-94), but my dad got 320,000 miles out of his '85 2wd 22R before he sold it (he originally bought it with 60K miles on it). The only major thing he did was a headgasket, not that it blew out, but just began to leak. After hearing all the problems with the timing chain guides breaking (as mine did in my '87), I am amazed that he never had any problems with the timing chain...or ever had to change it.
The 4cyl engines will last a long time if taken care of....I haven't had any experiences with the v6s, but besides the headgasket problems they had, it seems they are great engines also..
It all depends on how well they are cared for. I see people advertising them with 100k actual miles but 20k on new motor(how the heck did a Toyota motor go out at 80k???), and then I see them advertised with 280k claiming they still run great.
I just bought a 93 with 140k. I had to take the head off because the timing chain broke on the previous owner. The engine looked real good inside. The previous owner changed the oil every 3000 and used it mostly for commuting. I'm sure after having the head redone I will get another 140k, easy. I cleaned the injectors and it runs like new now.
Thanks a lot guys, that some great info that im sure is gonna help me a lot. Ive found a few trucks in the area (Austin, TX), but havnt had a chance to go see them for myself. Im gonna go check this one out today, this is the automart link.
I want my truck to look just like this, its exactly what ive been loking for. It doesnt list the miles so im gonna have to call to find out but what do you guys think about that truck? Its a 4 cyl which is what im looking for since ill get better mileage. Ill be sure to ask about the timing chain. How much would that be to be replace, i imagine it couldnt be too expensive? Thanks a lot ya'll.
thats exactly what mine is. Short bed 4cyl. Except mines green (just painted yesterday) and is lifted with bigger tires. If it runs as good as it looks, itd be a nice truck. Price isnt too bad depending on its mileage though. Call about it and post on here with your findings.

Timing chain could be expensive, depends on how they plan to do it. The dealer will probably want to take the head off. A smaller shop would probably be willing to do it without taking the head off.
If you buy from a dealer they may not know the repair history. If they do tell you it could be BS. I always try to buy from private parties, takes more work but you can find nicer vehicles, imo.

My 86 has 300000 Auto trans. Never used Toyota filters and never changed timing chain. Replaced head gasket twice due to leak. Still doesn't use or leak oil.
Sunday morning im gonna go check uot the truck, hopefully it doesnt have too many miles on it. How big is the lift on your truck and what size tires you have? I think all the pickups are pretty nice, but Ive just got a thing for the black ones , especially with the graphic on the side. I plan on putting some better tires, maybe mudding tires, and adding a lightbar. Thats also a question I have. Does anyone know the official name for those bars that sit in the beds where a tool box goes that sometiems has lights mounted on it? I have seen them advertised as light bars, roll bars, and even truck/show bars, heres a pic of what im talking about.
i just call them a light bar. Different makers call them different things i guess. My truck has a 3inch body lift with 31x10.50 tires. With the lift, i could put larger tires on, (probably 33's) but these 31's were on it when i got it and only have 5,000 miles on them so i will run them a litle while then maybe go bigger.
I like the truck in the last pic. I like the tires/rims but its lifted too high for me personally. (im only 5' 4" )
